India Parliament Protest: Opposition Backs Youth Movement, Demands Minister’s Resignation

India Parliament protest intensified on Wednesday after opposition parties disrupted proceedings in support of a growing youth-led movement demanding accountability over examination controversies and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, opposition lawmakers staged demonstrations inside and outside Parliament, accusing the government of failing to address student concerns and alleged police violence during recent protests in New Delhi.

The demonstrations mark one of the biggest political confrontations in recent months, as the newly emerged Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) continues to attract thousands of young supporters frustrated by repeated examination-related controversies and broader concerns over India’s education system.

Opposition Disrupts Parliament

Members of India’s opposition, led by the Congress party, gathered outside Parliament wearing black clothing and carrying placards demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Inside the Lok Sabha, opposition lawmakers repeatedly called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to discuss the recent police action against student protesters and address allegations surrounding examination scandals. Their protests led to disruptions that forced parliamentary proceedings to be suspended.

The demonstrations followed similar protests a day earlier when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi staged a sit-in outside the prime minister’s residence. Police briefly detained Gandhi during the protest before later releasing him.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi’s sister and a senior party strategist, was also briefly detained by police during Tuesday’s demonstrations before being released, according to police officials.

What Is the Cockroach Janata Party?

The Cockroach Janata Party, commonly referred to as CJP, began as an online satirical movement but has rapidly evolved into a nationwide youth campaign focused on education reforms.

Initially centered on repeated controversies involving competitive examinations, the movement has expanded into a broader platform expressing dissatisfaction among young Indians over employment opportunities, education policies, and government accountability.

Its supporters have organized large public demonstrations, attracting significant participation from students and young professionals.

Massive Protest in Delhi

The movement organized one of its largest demonstrations on Monday in central Delhi.

Organizers estimated that more than 50,000 people participated in the rally despite authorities refusing permission for a march toward Parliament. Police have not confirmed that estimate.

The protest began peacefully but later turned confrontational after clashes broke out between demonstrators and police.

According to police, 60 civilians and 118 police personnel sustained injuries during the violence. Authorities alleged that some protesters initiated the clashes.

However, protest organizers rejected those claims and accused police of using excessive force against peaceful demonstrators. They alleged that hundreds of protesters were injured, including at least one woman who reportedly remains in intensive care on a ventilator.

These allegations have not been independently verified.

Protesters Continue Their Sit-In

Despite the clashes, more than 1,000 protesters remained gathered at the demonstration site in central Delhi on Wednesday.

Many participants traveled long distances to join the movement and said they would continue their protest until the government addressed their demands and the education minister resigned.

Supporters have continued sending food supplies, including biryani, pizza, rice, and lentils, helping sustain the protesters through the ongoing demonstration despite difficult weather conditions.

Organizers said morale remained high as demonstrators continued chanting slogans and singing throughout the protest site.

Opposition Accuses Government of Avoiding Accountability

Congress leaders accused the Modi government of refusing to discuss student concerns in Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi said the government was avoiding accountability by declining to hold a parliamentary debate on the alleged police violence and examination-related controversies.

According to Congress, the government’s response has failed to address the concerns raised by students and opposition parties regarding recent events.

Meanwhile, several opposition parties publicly expressed support for the student movement while condemning what they described as heavy-handed police action during Monday’s protest.

Amnesty Raises Concerns

Amnesty International has accused Delhi Police of using excessive force during the protests.

Separately, India’s Supreme Court declined on Wednesday to hear a petition alleging police brutality against demonstrators.

The court’s decision means the allegations were not examined during Wednesday’s proceedings.

Authorities have maintained that police acted appropriately while responding to public disorder during the demonstration.

Education Minister Responds

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan issued a statement on social media addressing the ongoing controversy.

He said students deserve answers, reforms, and accountability, adding that the government remains committed to improving the education system.

Pradhan also criticized opposition parties, saying students should not become political tools during ongoing demonstrations.

Earlier, the minister had reportedly referred to CJP protesters as a “B-team of terrorists,” but his latest public remarks adopted a noticeably more conciliatory tone.

Protests Spread Beyond Delhi

Support rallies supporting the Cockroach Janata Party were also held in Mumbai and Bengaluru, drawing hundreds of participants.

While the demonstrations have expanded geographically, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not publicly commented directly on the protests.

Political observers say the movement represents one of the largest youth mobilizations in recent years and reflects growing frustration over education and employment issues among young Indians.

Whether the protests lead to policy reforms or political consequences remains uncertain, but the issue has already become a major point of confrontation between the government and opposition parties.
