Karachi Weather: Light Rain Brings Relief, More Showers Forecast

Karachi weather turned cooler on Saturday after light rain and drizzle were reported in several parts of the city, providing temporary relief from warm conditions. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), residents can expect more showers, thunderstorms and cloudy skies over the next two days as monsoon weather systems continue to influence Sindh.

The latest forecast also prompted the Sindh government to place emergency response agencies on alert, with authorities warning that heavy rainfall in some areas could lead to urban flooding.

Karachi Receives Light Rain and Drizzle

Several neighbourhoods across Karachi experienced light rainfall during Saturday afternoon. While some areas recorded only drizzle, others received light showers that brought down temperatures and created more comfortable weather conditions.

Among the areas that received rainfall were Surjani Town, Gulshan-e-Maymar and several suburban localities on the outskirts of the city.

The rainfall followed an earlier forecast from the Pakistan Meteorological Department, which had predicted afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and light to moderate rain.

The showers also reduced daytime heat, giving residents a brief break from humid weather that has persisted during the current monsoon season.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Karachi weather is expected to remain mostly cloudy over the coming two days.

Forecasters say thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall are likely during this period. Windy conditions may also accompany rain-producing clouds moving across the city.

The department has advised residents to remain aware of changing weather conditions, particularly during afternoon and evening hours when thunderstorms are more likely to develop.

Weather System Behind the Rain

Meteorological officials said the weather is being influenced by a weakening low-pressure system that was previously classified as a depression.

The system is now located over southeastern Rajasthan in India but continues to affect weather patterns across Pakistan.

According to the Meteorological Department, the low-pressure area continues to pull moisture-rich monsoon winds from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. These moisture-laden winds are contributing to unstable weather conditions across upper and central parts of the country.

At the same time, a separate westerly weather system is affecting northern Pakistan, creating conditions favourable for widespread rainfall in multiple regions.

The combination of these systems is expected to keep rain-producing clouds active across Sindh over the coming days.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department also issued a short-term weather advisory for several districts of Sindh.

Officials said rain accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms and windstorms was likely within the next three to six hours in:

Authorities also cautioned that isolated locations receiving heavier rainfall could experience urban flooding, particularly where drainage systems become overwhelmed.

Residents living in low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert during periods of intense rainfall.

Sindh Government Activates Emergency Response

In response to forecasts of continued monsoon activity, the Sindh government directed disaster management agencies to remain fully prepared for any emergencies.

According to official instructions, Adviser to the Chief Minister on Rehabilitation Gyan Chand Essrani ordered the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Rescue 1122 teams and mobile health units to maintain round-the-clock readiness.

The directive includes continuous weather monitoring and rapid deployment of emergency services if heavy rainfall causes flooding or other weather-related incidents.

Officials said the precautionary measures are intended to improve emergency response times during the ongoing monsoon season.

PDMA Deploys Special Response Vehicles

To strengthen preparedness, PDMA Sindh has deployed 50 specialised emergency vehicles equipped with dewatering pumps across different regions of the province.

The allocation includes:

• 10 vehicles stationed in Karachi.
• 25 vehicles deployed across Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas divisions.
• 15 vehicles assigned to Sukkur and Larkana divisions.

These vehicles are intended to help remove accumulated rainwater from roads and residential areas if heavy downpours occur.

Authorities say the deployment is part of wider contingency planning aimed at reducing disruptions caused by monsoon rainfall.

Monsoon rains play a crucial role in Pakistan’s annual climate, helping replenish water resources and support agriculture. However, periods of heavy rainfall can also create significant challenges in urban centres such as Karachi, where waterlogging and traffic disruptions often occur during intense showers.
