New York, NY — A federal judge has authorized the public release of a handwritten document alleged to be a suicide note penned by disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The note, which has sparked intense public interest and fresh speculation, was reportedly written just weeks before his death in a Manhattan jail cell.

The unsealed document, which surfaced during legal proceedings involving Epstein’s former cellmate, offers a cryptic glimpse into the final thoughts of the convicted sex offender as he awaited trial on federal sex-trafficking charges.

“A Treat to Say Goodbye”: Inside the Handwritten Note

The note, consisting of only seven handwritten lines, was unsealed on Wednesday by Judge Kenneth M. Karas. It was originally recovered by Nicholas Tartaglione, a former police officer and convicted murderer who shared a cell with Epstein at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC).

According to court filings, the text includes defiant remarks regarding the federal investigations into his conduct:

  • Defiance toward Authorities: “They investigated me for month – FOUND NOTHING!!!” the note reads, referencing years of legal scrutiny.

  • A Final Farewell: In a chilling sentence, the author writes, “It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye.”

  • Lack of Remorse: The note concludes with the lines, “Watcha want me to do – Bust out cryin!! NO FUN – NOT WORTH IT.”

The Origin of the Document

The note’s history is as controversial as its content. Tartaglione claimed he discovered the paper tucked inside a book following Epstein’s first apparent suicide attempt in July 2019. Epstein was found dead in his cell one month later, in August 2019—a death the New York City Medical Examiner ruled a suicide by hanging.

While Tartaglione’s legal team submitted the note to the court in 2021, it remained under seal until now. Judge Karas ruled that the “presumption of public access” outweighed privacy concerns, stating that transparency is vital for public confidence in the justice system.

Questions Over Authenticity

Despite the unsealing, significant questions remain:

  1. Verification: US authorities and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have not officially verified the handwriting as Epstein’s.

  2. The DOJ Response: A spokesperson for the DOJ previously told news outlets that the department had not seen this specific note during its exhaustive collection of millions of Epstein-related files.

  3. Prison Failures: The release reignites scrutiny over the “extensive security failures” at the MCC identified in previous federal reports, which found that guards failed to perform required checks on the night of Epstein’s death.

Impact on the Epstein Legacy

The release of this note adds another layer to the complex and dark history of the Epstein case. While it provides a look into the mindset of a man facing a life behind bars, it offers little closure for the victims seeking answers about his sprawling network of associates.

As of Wednesday evening, the DOJ has not issued a fresh comment on the document’s validity or its implications for the closed investigation into Epstein’s death.
