ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is bracing for a week of sluggish internet connectivity as the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) initiates critical maintenance on a major undersea cable. The repair work, managed by an international cable consortium, is aimed at fixing a persistent fault that has hampered the country’s digital infrastructure.
Peak Hour Disruptions Expected
The maintenance window officially opened on May 11 and is projected to conclude by May 18, 2026. While the internet will remain functional, users are warned of significant “service degradation.”
The impact is expected to be most severe during evening hours (peak times), as the data load shifts to alternative, more congested submarine routes. PTCL has expressed regret for the inconvenience, noting that the fix is essential for long-term network stability.
Why the Sudden Maintenance?
Pakistan’s digital economy has exploded in recent years, fueled by:
-
Widespread 4G/5G expansion and affordable smartphones.
-
A massive surge in the freelancing and remote work sector.
-
The rapid adoption of digital payment systems and streaming platforms.
However, this growth has put immense pressure on the country’s limited submarine cable gateways. Recurring faults have become a headache for the IT sector, often leading to financial losses for businesses that rely on 24/7 global connectivity.
Impact on Users and Businesses
The scheduled repair comes at a sensitive time as the government pushes for increased digitalization. Small business owners, online students, and freelancers are advised to schedule heavy data tasks—such as large uploads or video conferencing—during off-peak morning hours to avoid the evening slowdown.
PTCL currently manages three primary undersea optical fiber networks. This latest repair is part of a broader effort to modernize these links before the full-scale nationwide rollout of 5G services, which is currently in its pilot phase.
