ISLAMABAD — The Senate witnessed a heated standoff on Thursday as lawmakers from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged a walkout, citing grave concerns over the “mysterious and suspicious” movement of Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, from Adiala Jail to a medical facility.

The party’s parliamentary leader, Senator Syed Ali Zafar, spearheaded the protest, labeling the late-night transfer a blatant violation of human rights and constitutional protections.

“Secrecy Breeds Suspicion”: PTI Raises Alarms

During a point of order, Senator Zafar revealed reports that Bushra Bibi was moved to a hospital under the cover of night and returned to her cell without any public disclosure regarding her health status.

The PTI leadership raised several pointed questions to the Treasury benches:

  • Medical Disclosure: What specific condition necessitated an emergency hospital visit?

  • Facility Details: Which medical center was she taken to, and which doctors performed the examination?

  • Transparency: Why were the results of her medical tests kept confidential from her family and legal counsel?

Zafar alleged that the former first lady has been subjected to months of “solitary confinement and mental distress,” claiming that her personal physicians have been consistently denied access.

A List of Seven Demands

To end the parliamentary boycott, the PTI presented a formal list of requirements to the government:

  1. Immediate public release of all medical test results.

  2. Authorization for her personal doctors to conduct an independent check-up.

  3. Unrestricted access for family members.

  4. A transfer to Shifa International Hospital for specialized care.

  5. The formation of an independent medical board.

  6. An inspection visit by human rights organizations and a Senate committee.

  7. A formal investigation by the Senate Human Rights Committee.

“If the Upper House cannot ensure basic transparency for a citizen’s health, then what is the purpose of this sacred institution?” Zafar questioned before leading the walkout.

Government Response and Calls for a “Political Solution”

Responding to the outcry, Prime Minister’s aide Rana Sanaullah urged the opposition to follow “legal channels” rather than disrupting parliamentary proceedings. He suggested that the PTI should seek judicial intervention to secure jail visitation rights before bringing the matter to the floor.

Alternative Perspectives:

  • Senator Aimal Wali Khan (ANP): While supporting the provision of medical facilities, he cautioned against stalling the democratic process over “minor procedural issues.” He proposed a bipartisan committee of senior politicians to visit Adiala Jail and verify the living conditions of both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.

  • Sherry Rehman (PPP): While the Senate focused on jail conditions, Senator Rehman shifted focus to local issues, condemning the “inhumane” anti-encroachment drive in Bari Imam, where police used shelling and bulldozers against low-income residents.

Current Status

The session adjourned without a formal commitment from the government regarding the PTI’s demands. The party has vowed to continue its boycott until clarity is provided regarding Bushra Bibi’s wellbeing.
