KARACHI / ISLAMABAD – In a dual breakthrough for Pakistan’s economy, a leading Russian pharmaceutical giant has committed $80 million to launch local insulin production, while 16 Pakistani firms have secured historic approval to export seafood to the Russian market.
The Insulin Revolution: Reducing Dependency on Imports
Russian firm Zavod Medsintez, in collaboration with its local partner Genetics Pharmaceuticals, is set to transform Pakistan’s healthcare landscape. The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has officially paved the way for this massive investment, which will be executed in two critical phases:
-
Phase 1 (By Dec 2028): An investment of $20 million to build an aseptic filling plant. This facility will handle the specialized filling and packaging of imported bulk insulin.
-
Phase 2 (By Dec 2031): A further $60 million investment for an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) production plant. This will allow Pakistan to manufacture insulin from raw materials to final packaging, marking a total technology transfer.
With DRAP already approving retail prices for “Rosinsulin” products, this move is expected to drastically lower the cost of life-saving medicine for millions of Pakistani diabetics.
Seafood Exports: A $300 Million Gateway
On the trade front, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced that Russia has cleared 16 Pakistani seafood processing plants for export. This is the first time Pakistani fish and seafood will enter the vast Russian market, which also serves as a gateway to the Eurasian Economic Union.
The Export Impact:
-
Current Exports: Over $500 million annually.
-
Projected Growth: Estimated to reach $800 million with Russian market access.
-
Revenue Boost: Russia alone could contribute an initial $300 million in sales
This “historic achievement” reflects Pakistan’s successful efforts in meeting international quality standards. To maximize this opportunity, shipments will utilize sea, air, and even land routes through Central Asia.
