Pakistan has the ingredients needed to become one of the region’s leading digital export economies, but turning that potential into reality will require business-friendly policies, technology adoption, and stronger support for local exporters.

That was the key message from Shawn Yang, General Manager for Asia Pacific at Alibaba.com, who believes Pakistan’s entrepreneurs and manufacturers are well-positioned to capture growing opportunities in global trade if the country continues to improve its export ecosystem.

Pakistan’s Export Potential Is Stronger Than Ever

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Yang said Pakistan already possesses several competitive advantages, including an energetic entrepreneurial culture, skilled manufacturers, and internationally recognised export industries.

He explained that simplifying export procedures, creating stable taxation policies, and making it easier to do business could significantly improve Pakistan’s competitiveness in international markets.

According to Yang, the next phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC 2.0) offers an opportunity to move beyond infrastructure by strengthening industrial cooperation, improving logistics networks, and lowering trade costs for exporters. These improvements could help Pakistani businesses reach overseas buyers more efficiently while boosting export growth.

AI Is Changing the Rules of Global Trade

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming one of the biggest game changers for small and medium-sized businesses worldwide.

Yang noted that AI-powered tools are helping companies complete tasks that once required large teams and significant budgets. Businesses can now generate product descriptions, communicate with international customers in different languages, create marketing content, and respond to buyer inquiries much faster.

For many SMEs, these technologies reduce operational costs while allowing them to compete with much larger global companies.

He added that digital trade platforms are removing traditional barriers, enabling businesses to sell products internationally without establishing physical offices or expensive distribution networks.

Pakistani SMEs Can Reach Buyers Worldwide

Alibaba.com believes Pakistan’s small and medium-sized enterprises have enormous growth potential if they embrace digital transformation.

Through online B2B marketplaces, local manufacturers can now connect with buyers in more than 200 countries and regions, opening doors that were previously difficult for smaller businesses to access.

However, Yang pointed out that success in international trade depends on more than simply listing products online. Companies must also focus on consistent product quality, strong customer service, and building long-term trust with overseas buyers.

Challenges Still Need Attention

Despite Pakistan’s strengths, several obstacles continue to limit export growth.

Yang identified key challenges, including:

  • Limited digital capabilities among many businesses
  • Insufficient knowledge of international markets
  • Logistics and shipping difficulties
  • Challenges in establishing credibility with overseas buyers

He encouraged exporters to invest in digital skills, improve manufacturing standards, obtain internationally recognised certifications, and make greater use of trusted B2B platforms to strengthen their global presence.

Industries with Strong Global Demand

According to Yang, Pakistan already has several sectors capable of attracting significant international demand.

These include:

  • Textiles and apparel
  • Sports goods
  • Surgical instruments
  • Leather products
  • Home textiles
  • Furniture
  • Food and agricultural products
  • Value-added manufacturing

He said global buyers continue searching for dependable suppliers, and Pakistani manufacturers are well positioned to meet that demand by focusing on quality, reliability, and timely deliveries.

Advice for First-Time Exporters

For entrepreneurs entering export markets, Yang recommended building a professional online presence from the beginning.

He advised businesses to create detailed product listings, respond quickly to customer inquiries, maintain high product quality, and focus on developing long-term relationships rather than expecting immediate success.

According to him, sustainable export growth is built on consistency, credibility, and trust.

Looking Ahead

Global supply chains are evolving as international buyers diversify sourcing destinations and seek reliable manufacturing partners. This shift presents Pakistan with an opportunity to increase its share of global exports.

Yang expressed confidence that if businesses continue investing in innovation, AI, product quality, and digital transformation, Pakistan could witness a major improvement in its position within global trade over the next five years.

As more commerce moves online, experts believe that empowering SMEs with technology and improving the country’s business environment will play a crucial role in unlocking Pakistan’s long-term export potential.
