The United Arab Emirates has officially entered a new chapter in public transportation with the launch of its first intercity passenger train service. Operated by Etihad Rail, the inaugural journey connected Fujairah and Abu Dhabi, giving residents and visitors a faster, more comfortable way to travel between the two emirates. The milestone reflects years of planning and investment aimed at strengthening the country’s transport network.

The first train departed from Fujairah in the early morning and reached Abu Dhabi in approximately one hour and 45 minutes, significantly reducing travel time compared to a typical road journey. Hundreds of passengers took part in the historic trip, many describing the experience as smooth, relaxing, and unlike anything previously available in the UAE.

Travellers enjoyed scenic views of the country’s desert landscapes and mountain ranges while travelling in modern coaches equipped with spacious seating, Wi-Fi, charging ports, luggage storage, and other passenger-friendly amenities. Each train can accommodate around 400 passengers and travel at speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour.

The launch marks the beginning of a phased rollout of the UAE’s passenger railway network. While the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah route is the first to become operational, additional stations in Dubai, Sharjah, Al Dhaid, and the Al Dhafra region are scheduled to open over the coming months, gradually expanding rail connectivity across the country.

Etihad Rail is part of one of the UAE’s largest infrastructure projects, designed to improve mobility, reduce road congestion, support tourism, and provide a more sustainable transport option. The complete railway network will stretch approximately 900 kilometres and eventually connect 11 cities and regions across all seven emirates. Officials also expect the network to play an important role in reducing carbon emissions while supporting long-term economic growth.

Public response has been overwhelmingly positive. According to local reports, more than 10,000 tickets were sold before the inaugural service, highlighting strong demand for rail travel in a country traditionally dependent on road transport. Introductory fares and future route expansions are expected to encourage even more passengers to choose rail for business and leisure travel.

The introduction of passenger rail comes as the UAE continues to invest heavily in advanced transportation projects, including smart mobility initiatives and high-speed transit systems. With Etihad Rail now carrying passengers, the country has added another landmark achievement to its rapidly evolving infrastructure and transportation landscape.
