Expired or Invalid CNICs Could Lead to SIM Suspension, Says PTA
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched a nationwide awareness campaign urging mobile phone users to renew expired or invalid Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) to avoid possible suspension of their SIM cards.
The initiative comes as authorities step up efforts to improve digital security, strengthen identity verification, and prevent the misuse of mobile phone connections registered against outdated or inactive records.
Why Mobile Users Should Act Now
According to the PTA, SIM cards linked to expired, cancelled, or inactive CNICs may be suspended under existing telecom regulations if users fail to update their identity information.
The regulator has advised citizens to renew their CNICs before they expire and then immediately update the renewed details with their respective mobile network operators. This process ensures that customer records remain accurate and that mobile services continue without interruption.
Over 4.9 Million SIMs Under Review
Officials say the verification campaign will be carried out in phases, targeting mobile connections associated with invalid identity records.
A spokesperson for the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) revealed that approximately 4.9 million SIMs have been identified for review. These include connections registered against expired identity cards as well as records belonging to deceased individuals.
Authorities believe the phased approach will help users update their information while allowing telecom operators to maintain an accurate subscriber database.
Focus on National Security and Digital Safety
The latest move follows recommendations made by NADRA and directions issued by the Ministry of Interior to enhance the country’s digital security framework.
Officials say the campaign is intended to reduce identity fraud, limit the misuse of mobile phone services, and improve the overall reliability of Pakistan’s telecommunications system.
By ensuring that every active SIM is linked to a valid and verifiable CNIC, regulators hope to strengthen public trust in digital services while supporting law enforcement efforts against illegal activities.
What Mobile Users Need to Do
PTA has advised all mobile subscribers to check the validity of their CNICs as soon as possible. If the identity card has expired or is close to expiring, users should first complete the renewal process through NADRA and then visit their mobile service provider or customer service center to update their registration details.
Taking these simple steps can help prevent service disruptions and ensure uninterrupted access to voice, messaging, and mobile internet services.
A Step Toward a More Secure Digital Pakistan
The nationwide verification campaign reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to build a safer and more transparent digital environment. As millions of people rely on mobile connectivity every day, maintaining accurate identity records has become increasingly important for both public safety and secure communication.
For mobile users, updating CNIC information on time is a simple but essential step to keep their SIMs active and avoid unnecessary inconvenience.
